Dance-Theater

Telling stories from the 21st century through collaborative and innovative projects.

A. Periplum

A. Periplum is a one-woman dance performance with live music that takes the audience on a spellbinding journey from the landscapes of our inner longings to the literal and figurative mountains we must climb on the way to becoming ourselves. Ezra Pound coined the term “periplum,” describing it as "correct geography; not as you would find it if you had a geography book and a map, but as it would be in 'periplum,' that is, as a coasting sailor would find it." He further describes it as, "A journey not by fixed charts or stars, but by intuition and reason...the journey thus becomes one continuous discovery and accumulation of experience."

Vacío/Void

The title refers to the spaces in-between an individual and everything else–be it other beings or the natural world. Using moving set pieces, the performers create an ever-changing landscape exploring how all the pieces of an ecosystem entangle and come together.  Using improvised movement scores, flamenco, and new music compositions by  Lauren Valerie Coons the work uses Rachel Carson’s writings as a point of departure.

Fragmentos

Created for intimate spaces such as ballrooms with the audience surrounding the performers, the work features original compositions by flamenco pianist Alex Conde. Along with the piano and spoken poetry, Garza and Blumenfeld’s performance and choreography delve into our inability yet constant attempts to see the world through another person’s eyes.

(Des)Encaracolarse

An exploration of the ways in which we enshell ourselves and the transformation that takes place when our shells break. Layering poetry, classical music, and visual arts with flamenco, these world-class artists take the audience on a journey through the curves and spirals, echoes and reflections in the metaphor of the seashell. The title comes from a word Pablo Neruda invented to show his obsession with shells.
