Felise Bagley and Alice Blumenfeld named Karamu House Room in the House Fellows

Karamu House announces seventeen (17) local artists receiving awards through Room in the House fellowship (RITH) for the 2023-24 Season. With generous support from Cuyahoga County residents through a Support for Artists grant from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture, RITH artist awards are designed to empower artists’ creative practice.

Bagley and Blumenfeld are working on new choreography inspired by the writings of Federico García Lorca and other artists of his generation. Bagley and Blumenfeld will also explore the parallels between Lorca’s flamenco-influenced poetry and Langston Hughes’ jazz poetry.

The choreographers’ partnership has developed into a concrete creative practice which involves discovering new movement through improvisatory explorations, deconstructing flamenco movement, translating poetry and imagery into movement, and developing choreography that exists at the intersection of their distinct movement histories.
